Then what does oone do about section breaks? In my copy of Word, when a
book has section breaks I only see one blank line between pages. Do I leave
them as section breaks and assume things will work oout, or do I manually
put in enough lines between pages?

No, if what I think happened actually happened, there were section breaks in
the original scan that did not specify a new page, and someone converted all
section breaks to page breaks, so page breaks got stuck where they shouldn't
have been. Word's global search and replace can't tell the difference
between the section breaks which specify and new page and the ones which
don't, so if you ask Word to convert section breaks to page breaks in that
instance, then you get a mess which has to be cleaned up by hand.

So now that I'm on page 134 or so of the book, should I go back and try to
rectify what I've done, i.e. putting in page breaks where there shouldn't
