[bksvol-discuss] Re: Tackling Text Submissions

Hi, Natalie. (smile) May I teach you my trick for handling text files? When I get a text file, I open it with Microsoft Word and immediately save it as an rtf file before doing anything else. If there are page breaks in the file, they are preserved that way. Then, I move around between the pages with my arrow keys and listen to Jaws. If I hear it say "page break" I know that there is an actual page break in the file. If it just says something like "page 2," I know that page breaks weren't included in the original text file. If the book contains no page breaks, I look for page numbers in the text itself. If they are present, I insert page breaks with Word. If I can't find page numbers, I either reject the book or, if the text is very cleanly scanned, I see if Cindy or another sighted person is interested in validating with a print copy of the book to put in page numbers and page breaks. I hope this helps. Basically, once you settle the page break issue, you have a normal rtf file to work with just like always. I hope this helps.

I wish I felt confident enough to really work with page breaks in text format because there is some stuff that seems interesting in text format, but I am afraid I would mess it up even more.
