It is interesting that as this was being discussed I was thinking of books I have seen with those dots between the chapter titles and the page numbers in tables of contents and thinking that inserting them might be a solution. I was hesitant enough, though, that I did not mention it until now. I am certainly not the official authority on this, but as far as I would be concerned that would be a perfectly acceptable solution. I am not really sure that it counts as altering the text. There are numerous adaptations that have to be made to convert these books into ebooks that do not change a thing about how the book was actually written like moving page numbers from the bottom of the page to the top or deleting page headers and this seems to be just another example to me. Doug just worked on a book that the title of contents literally had periods between the chapter titles and the page they started on and we were wondering if that would be allowable in general. It would be more than three (an ellipsis), but it could preserve the structure of the title of content. As always, we want to maintain the integrity of not altering text, but it does seem that the BookShare tool already significantly alters things, so this might be an acceptable accommodation to preserve the visual integrity for sighted readers.
