Roger,

What you suggest certainly makes sense and it is a step short of making the
correction. It is unfortunate that we are prohibited from doing the elegant
solution - correcting the mistake that the publisher should have caught.

I am not sure I understand. I was not suggesting that the spelling be
corrected, only acknowledging it and letting the reader know that it was
left that way on purpose. What I suggested is extraneous material though.
How is it different from inserting a note of a blank page or describing an
illustration by placing such notes in brackets? In both cases it would just
be a clarification of what is already on the page.

This advice is incorrect. Do not correct spelling or insert extraneous
material.

Spelling mistakes in the body of a book made by publisher and author are not
corrections to be made by Bookshare. Such mistakes are endlessly annoying to
us all however correcting themT is copy editing which is not within our
purview under the Chafee Ammendment

As long as you place the sic in brackets I would think it would be okay.
After all, we add other things in brackets to clarify what is on the page.
Perhaps it would be good to note that the sic was added by the Bookshare
proofreader. That would also be enclosed in the brackets.
