[bksvol-discuss] Re: Submitted: Venus in Copper

Oh, Evan, I was feeling no pain, but it bugged me that so obvious a thing
that could be done wasn't allowed. Let's just say I was ever-so-slightly
irritated. Let's face it if one proofreads, one wants the text to be
correct. Now if it had been possible to inform the author that there is a
typo on page such-and-such, explaining the nature of said typo and asking
the author if she/he minded if the typo were corrected. Then ... Yeah, I'm
thinking publishers aren't taking pride in the books they turn out because,
we all know this, they want to sell books. Now you and I would say that
they'd sell those books if the book wasn't sloppy, had no typographical
errors, etc. Picky, picky, picky. Okay, so be it. Regards, Kim Friedman.

I know exactly where you're coming from here, and I feel your pain. The
temptation to fix typos in the original text can be very hard to resist. And
these publishers have people who are paid to proofread the books they
publish.

It may just be that I'm getting older, but it seems to me that newer books
have more misprints than older books do. The pressure to get books out as
cheaply as possible may be taking a toll on text quality.

Evan
