Try asking that on the k1000 list. The techs hang out there and can help.

  Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Sluggish Kurzwe8il 1000

  Hello Everyone,

I am having a problem with Kurzweil 1000 being sluggish. This is
not a new problem for me. I just figured that there was nothing that
I could do about it. However, Kellie thought that someone had found
a solution for this, so here is what is happening.

The most noticeable issue that I have, which no one else seems to
have is that I can't scan and recognize at the same time. I am using
Kurzweil version 11 and had this problem with version 9 also. If I
have K1000 set to scan and recognize, my scanner will not engage for
the next scan until recognition of the last page scanned is
complete.Scanner source held between scans is set to never. This
makes repeated scanning impossible, makes scanning a book take eons,
and is annoying. I have solved this by scanning to images and
recognizing them later when my computer isn't doing anything
else. And no, I do not have a slow computer or inadequate ram.

My computer has a 2.6 ghz intel processor with 1 gb of ram.

K1000 is also sluggish when moving about within a document for
editing purposes. I can't begin to tell you how much slower it is to
move from word to word within a document in Kurzweil than it is while
using JAWS in any other program.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to speed things up? I do have
a really cheap scanner, a visioneer 5800, if that matters. And
before you ask, my computer gets defraged and experiences disk
  clean-up regularly.

  Thanks for any help.

  Peace,
  Mayrie
