Most of the time I can submit my RTF file without having to go to Word; in
many books there are a number of blank lines at the bottom of the page in
Kurzweil but apparently Bookshare takes care of these because I don't see
them in the finished product. Jill

Hi, Mary, I do not know about the ten spaces before the first line of
text; but I have experienced the disappearing blank line issue that you
have mentioned ever since I began using K1000 back in late 2006. From
doing some checking using search and replace, it seems as though it does
not remove all of them, but most of them seem to disappear from the tops
of pages after saving and reopening the file, as you describe. I have
generally used a search and replace to restore them when I have finished
all other work on the file, just before sending it up to Bookshare. I do
one search and replace to add a blank line to the top of each page, then
do another to remove two blank lines and replace with one on any pages
that may have had a blank line already that K1000 did not remove. (Also, I
have noticed that K1000 adds blank lines to the bottoms of most pages
after saving and reopening files. I have checked and verified this many
times. After a few editing sessions, it is not uncommon for me to see
three or four blank lines at the bottoms of most, if not all pages. I use
a similar search and replace routine to reduce those blank lines to one at
the bottom of each page. I suppose those extras wouldn't really matter,
since I believe Bookshare tools would remove them. But these files go into
my personal library after they are scanned and edited, or validated, so I
want them to look right.)
I don't know how pervasive this blank line hocus pocus is, but it is one
of those things that I hope they figure out one day and fix if it is not
just a quirk for a few of us here and there. I like the program a lot, but
this is just one more little annoyance to deal with, like the need to
bring the files into MS Word before sending up a validated book to be
added to the collection.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re-appearing spaces and disappearing lines
ello. I have two Kurzweil-related problems. I validate RTF books, using
XP home and Kurzweil 11.
First, the book I am working on right now has good page breaks, but no
page numbers. I am inserting page numbers at the top of pages. However,
each page seems to begin with ten spaces on the first line, before
getting to the text. I go page break, blank line, page number, blank
line; then delete all of the spaces. This is fine until I save the file,
but when I go back into the file and check, these ten spaces have
re-appeared. I suppose this gives the stripper an appetizer, but is
there an explanaytion for this?
Second problem: When I inserta blank line after the page break, most of
these (and it happens consistently in every book) disappear after I have
saved the file and go back to check. It reads page break, page number.
I have solved this by inserting two lines following the page break, but
is this normal or am I missing a setting?
Any thoughts on all this quirkiness would be appreciated. Thanks.
