If she can use regular computer programs, you might try having her use the xml file from the daisy book in a web browser that can enlarge the whole page like Opera or Internet Explorer 8.

Nichole reads her box on her device. I should clarify what that means. She has a speech output device as her voice, but she reads her books in the text only format, without speech output. The book reader that is integrated into her software is not controlled by the Windows visual accessibility software. Nichole prefers her teen books in regular fonts, but likes to read to/with kids in larger fonts, just like the original text is.No sweat; I was just hoping to give her and younger kids more independence.Valerie On 10 29, 2009, at 5:34 PM, Lynn I wrote:Can't all of the visual adjustments be made in the Windows control panel under accessibility? I'm sure you already thought of that, but figured I'd try. I do so want everyone to beable to read happily! Nichole has really poor physical access, so she can only pick a book from 3, then read or pause. Many kids with multiple handicaps or severe physical handicapscan only do limited things by themselves, and unfortunately none of thetools for BookShare that are accessible to kids like Nichole allow you topermanently designate a larger font. If the person has some usable sight they can control the size with their own reading software. Just my opinion. Bookshare's tools take big fonts and shrink them, except where they are headings. I think it is assumed that folks needing font enlargement will use their adaptive software to do the enlarging. I know that back in the dark ages, screen readers did choke on fonts larger than about 24 or 30. That may have changed with advances in software. My suggestion would be to try what you want to try, Valerie, and then, once the book is included into the collection, download it and see what the tools have done to or with it. Since you are the proofreader, I think Lori's question/issue was addressed. Just my thoughts. He came to me from Shelley in larger fonts, and I just wondered if there was at least the four pt. variance if it could still be kept at a larger size. I had not stopped to think about screen readers, can anyone address that issue? Thanks! Valerie On 10 29, 2009, at 3:56 PM, Lori wrote:Well, if it is oked, then it would be important to let the validator/ proofreader know as if one is following the directions from the manual it says to change to 12 pt. I'm not techy enough to know, but does a particular size font interfere with the screen reader? Okay, my question is, in kids books, can we use larger pt. fonts, like 16 and 24? Nichole was showing her books on her screen to a buddy and they always wanted larger fonts. Most kids books scan at something s like 16 & 24, so I am hoping that would be okay. I am doing two of Shelley's Stanley books and would like to do them like that if it is acceptable and will still handle well in Braille.
