Hi Rita,

An em dash is a long dash signifying a pause between words. Most people call a dash the thing that is really a hyphen, a shorter dash, and this is used to create compound words, or to join the beginning and end of a word when said word is broken either by the end of a line, or the end of a page.

Does this answer your question? If not, ask again and we'll clarify.

Peace,
Mayrie

two hyphens in this case, since it apparently is
easier for braille readers or jaws
readers--someone--than the em dash. I'm using two
hyphens instead of the em dash now as a result of
recent posts. smile

Yes, here you go. One from a book I'm working on
today.

"...understanding that every issue is a women's
issue-drugs, gun
violence..."

I hope that helps clarify.

Best,
