If you're not using MS Word, or even if you are, you can create an em dash by holding down the alt key and typing 0151 on the numpad.

Hi Ann,

I am advocating replacing the em dashes with two hyphens. Sorry if I was unclear. Replace em dashes with double hyphens, for the sake of our young braille readers. And you are not harming the print file, as to a sighted reader the difference between an em dash and two hyphens together is very difficult to discern. Jamie said so. I asked to make sure that we would be doing no real harm. And, as I am sure you remember, in the days of type writers, we had to create em dashes by typing two hyphens.

Also, in my answer to your question about how to use the find and replace dialogue to change em dashes to two hyphens, I assumed you would be using MSWord. And I know I should never never assume. Just clarifying that too.

Okay, I'm shutting up now.

Peace,
Mayrie

Hi all,

Mary, so if we replace the m-dash with two dashes, that's not good, is that what you're saying? You're advocating leaving the M-dashe as is or replacing it with two dashes?

As for the Homonym Hop Toads, yes, I agree there. It does come from not reading enough braille. We all get caught by them. I did the other day. "malled" for "mauled". We do need to teach our kids better.
