Nancy, You're doing great and are asking the right questions. I'm sure all of us using Kurzweil do some things differently just as there is no one right way in this whole computer business. After I use the edit command and change the word if necessary, I just use the escape key and don't save until I have finished with ranked spelling, but if you want to save with each word, that's fine too. The okay command will get you out of the ranked spelling program. I don't use the apply button so I hope someone else will advise you about that. Lots of times I just down arrow on the words, not changing anything if I know they are dialect, slang, etc. As long as I am reading the book I am scanning, I usually don't use ranked spelling until I have finished the book. I hope this has helped; don't let yourself become stressed over this; hopefully it should be an enjoyable volunteer activity. Oh yes, I read the bvolunteer manual. I am not validating, I am just trying to get my scan in shape so it will get picked up by an experienced validator who can give me constructive criticism of how I can improve my scans.

I don't have the nerve to be a validator.

Nancy, have u read the volunteer manual yet? Also, there's some
validation tips on the friends of bookshare site:
www.friendsofbookshare.org
I think Jake Brownell also has some tips on his site but I don't have
the address.

Kit Kat bar or KitKat bar is what I found in Wikipedia so I assume, since
you said you were talking about the candy bar, one problem is that you
skipped the Capitalization. I am not familiar with "rank spelling" so I
don't know what it will do it you add the capitals. Good luck. When all else
fails, overrule your program and leave what you know is correct.

Hi All,

I finished scanning my book a while ago. I pressed the rank spelling
button
and it gave me a number, which greatly improved when I left out
capitalized
words.

Here's the question:

the word is kat, I tab and see that it does or does not have a replacement

suggestion. I tab to the read in context...still not sure about kat. Tab

on over to where you can enter on the word and the location where it is
used
is brought up. I find the word and I can tell it is correct because it's talking about a kit-kat candy bar. At that point, I hit escape and land back on the rank spelling listand tab to the word kat, tab past and go to
ignore all which I hit. Then I tab more past the ignore all, past edit
and
wind up at apply. I hit there. Does that make my word safe?
If a lot of the mis spelled words are actually correct and I go to ignore
all, do I have to immediately go to apply to make my words safe

What is the "OK" used for?

If I go to edit with the word kat and find that it should be 'cat' do I
change the word to cat right then and do a ctrl s to save the corrected
word?

At what point have I done enough to exit the rank spelling and move on to something like numbering the pages by the book and then reading the book
and
hopefully catch some of those silly words that are spell right but are the

wrong word? I am doing all of this in K1000.

Where can I find out what else needs to be done to the book itself before
I
fill out the required paperwork to submit the book?

Thank y'all for any and all help and suggestions.

Nancy
