Mary, as the scanner of Identical, would it be better if I preserved images? I have never done this before but would be willing to read the Kurzweil manual to help figure out what I am doing. Thank you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mayrie ReNae" <mayrierenae@xxxxxxxxx>

Hi Cindy, Setting indentations doesn't stick. People choose within theirdaisy readers whether they want indentations at the beginning of paragraphs,or a double line space. All lines following a hard return are indented in braille. Putting The first word of each indented line in all caps wouldwork, but only if no other words are in all caps for any other reason at thebeginning of lines. I do admit that seeing the dashes might be annoying, but I don't know of another solution for this problem. In braille they can easily be skipped over. With speech how much punctuation is spoken can eliminate having to hear them, and the reader can search for them when he/she so chooses. Another little possible hitch. A braille line, in many cases is limited to forty characters. For this reason, I'd change my previous recommendation that all indented lines be preceded by dashes equal to thenumber of spaces the lines are indented. I think this would be a good ideaif the poem has shape, as in the case of the sword that you mentioned, so that the shape is maintained. However, in the books that I've looked at, sometimes blocks of text is offset to the right in just that blocks, or as single lines. In those cases, I think the amount of indentation isn't asimportant as the fact that the indentation exists. In such cases, I'd think that preceding these lines as a matter of course with (perhaps) four dasheswould be sufficient. I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you are willing to take onthis book! I have wanted to read this author's work since I was first toldabout her, but am completely unwilling to read them in any form that sacrifices the form of the poetry. It's important! I have tried many options for scanning and recognition myself, but discovered, sadly, that I can't do this work justice without the help of a sighted person. And, if, after you finish this one, and you aren't either ready to tear your hair out, or totally frustrated or discouraged, I have four other books by this author that I'd love to see made a part of the Bookshare collection and would be THRILLED to scan! I know that this book will be a LOT of intensive work! And I, for one, truly appreciate your willingness to do what is necessary to preserve the form of the poetry! If you have any other questions, please, feel free to contact meeither off or on the list and I'll either clarify anything I've made a hashof in this note, or help you brainstorm other solutions that will preserve the poetry and maybe lessen the amount of work you have to do, while still preserving the poetry's form. Thank you. I must admit that I don't understand why setting the margins doesn't work. Making first lines indented works, or doesn't it?I did plan to use the hard return at the end of lines and asterisks between the verses. I was thinking of setting the margins initially, or first linesindented at 5 and then the words that are at the left-hand margin flushleft. Or making the word that's at the left-hand margin Bold or caps and ona line by itself. If you think neither will work I'll use the dashes, but isn't that annoying, or can Braille and Daisy be set to ignore them? CindyHere is what I believe will work, and the only thing that probably will to preserve the placing of poetry on the page where the author placed it. To indicate blank lines, place an asterisk on the blank line. For a line that is not flush left, I'd place a dash to fill up each space on the line that is blank before the beginning of the line. A hard return at the end of every line will preserve the end of the line. I would use a dash for this and not an asterisk because an asterisk in braille takes up two spaces and that would throw off the simetry of the poem. I suggest dashes because we know they translate properly to both daisy and brf files. I'm positive that my suggestion will work to preserve the placement of text on the page. Would someone PUhLEESE download Alphabestiary by Jane Yolen for me and look at the poem Ant Song and tell me where it is on the page? I didn't know, then, that line spaces were deleted, so all the verses of all the poems are no doubt run together, but I need to know if my resetting margins so that some poems are flush left and others, like Ant Song, are placed in the middle of the page. In a while I'll be validating Identical. I've looked at the book, though I won't be able to get to it until I do a couple of others (Jill, there's no hurry), and I have several ideas what to do, but one of them involves changing the margins for parts.
