Well, you're not going to get any tomatoes from me because I agree with you completely. It's not just students who may need those page numbers. And for various reasons, the numbers put in the book by Bookshare's processing software may not necessarily agree with the actual page numbers in the book. The first book for the nonfiction club, The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales, is an excellent example. There are 35 Roman numeral pages, but in the .brf file, the numbers following the lines of dashes are all Arabic numbers, so when we get to the actual Arabic page 1 of the book we are on page 36 according to Bookshare's numbering. So any page references in the body of the text would be 35 pages off if I didn't have the actual page numbers to go by. Fortunately, thanks to a conscientious scanner or validator - or both - all the actual page numbers in this book are present, so I can use those if I need to give a page number. There are other examples like this I am sure, so I think that it is very important that either the scanner or validator should add the actual page numbers if they do not scan well. It should probably be the scanner if at all possible since they already have access to the book and the validator may not.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Page Numbers

Hi Everybody,

I know we've been batting this page numbers thing back and forth, but I think the page numbers should become more important because we are probably going to have a lot more students downloading for school. An educator might ask them to read any of our books. Having the page number would make it easier for her to make reference points.

OK.....Start throwing those tomatoes.
