Bookshare has established style guidance to assist proofreaders assure Braille readability of certain text elements. One example would be ellipses, "Treat them as you would any word. Add a space before and after but not within." In cases where guidance has not been provided our standard for authoritative decisions on correct Braille is the INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR BRAILLE TRANSCRIBING, Fifth Edition, by Constance Risjord, et al of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. This manual will remain our reference until the DAISY Consortium establishes its guidance on Braille-sensitive conversion of print to digital rendering at which time DAISY practice will become our standard. (You are welcome to send yours to me at scottr@xxxxxxxxxxxx) BTW for those new to this list: The Bookshare Volunteer Discussion List is a forum for discussion of issues related to scanning and proofreading books for submission to Bookshare. It is monitored but not moderated by Bookshare staff. Thus volunteer voice has priority here on non-policy issues. Senior volunteers, many with hundreds of hours of direct experience, offer their hard-earned advice and wisdom generously. Out of respect for the commitment and focus of all strive to keep posts short, to the point, civil, and practical.
