Try ThriftBooks.com or PaperbackSwap.com. Also, you might want to look at the wholesale lots for sale on eBay. That can be more expensive in the sense of paying out a lump sum all at once, but it can be the source for about the cheapest price per book. The larger the lot the cheaper the individual books. Another source might be your local thrift store. Also, I'd feel mor comfortable about buying the books rather than borrowing from libraries because scanning necessarily destroys the spines. But if I could get books for free without having to worry about wrecking them, I'd certainly jump at such opportunities as well.
