Hi Cindy and everyone!
I'm pretty easy on books, even when scanning them, and I have had almost
new books crack when just opening them, so some books are bound very poorly
these days.

Personally, I get my books from the library, both when I used to scan (and
now, that I've promised to do one hat no one else can get) and to proof.
Scanning really doesn't damage the books, even though one has to press
down on the spines to get good scans. And it doesn't damage paperbacks any
more than reading them, does. I just finished reading a paperback from
the library that I had to hold together with rubber bands because it was
beginning to fall apart. When the books are extremely popular and not that
well made, by the time I get it just opening the book and turning the
pages to read causes more damage. This has happened at least 3 times over
the years. Once it was falling apart when I checked it out.

I just want to know how people here get new books to scan. That is, what
would be the most cost-effective way of finding and purchasing books that
I might be interested enough to read and scan for the collection? Amazon
is a great company and their prices are pretty good. However, I've seen
used books on there asking for $4 for shipping, which is ridiculous when
you can get books locally without paying that. Also, I'd feel mor
comfortable about buying the books rather than borrowing from libraries
because scanning necessarily destroys the spines. But if I could get
books for free without having to worry about wrecking them, I'd certainly
jump at such opportunities as well. Any tips you're willing to share
would be appreciated.
