Actually nancy, The hair I am refering to is not in the ear, but around it. In goldens they rarely get hair inside their ear canals and if they do it isn't a big deal to keep it in. But their coat grows extremely thick all around the ear causing a serious block of ventalation. What I do is trim the hair directly below and around the ear canal allowing better mentalation into the ear canal. That is where the short bladed sheers come in handy, and they are small enough I can manipulate them easily while holding my dog's head still. I also clip his feet using the same sheers, trimming out the hair on top and between the toes, so that he has traction. Most golden guide dog owners don't do this, but in the show world the golden's ears are supposed to be trimmed, the hair around them, not the actual leather. Smile. Sorry for the confusion. What do you use to trim your dog's ear hair? OUCH! Pinking Shears?? I'm glad they work for Shelley. I think a more conventional method is to poof a small amount of 'special' ear powder into the ear (mainly used to give a easier to work with ear hair surface) and then reach into the ear canal with thumb and forefinger, grasp some hair and remove with a twisting motion. Repeat as necessary until the inner ears are hair free. This works very well and is not supposed to 'hurt' like pulling off a bit of head hair.
