Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

This book was my last book of the summer reading contest, and definitely
made my summer more fun. It was about a 78-year-old man who has spent his
life being a teacher. But it wasn't until he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou
Gehrig's disease) that he really began teaching people how to live.

One of his former students, Mitch Albom, saw Morrie on Nightline on
television. That was when he found out that his old friend and mentor was
dying. Mitch flew from Detroit to Massachusetts where Morrie lived. Mitch
had taken many classes under Morrie in college, but this began his final
class about The Meaning of Life.

Morrie taught Mitch, and everyone who's read this book, about how to accept
death as part of living. You have to learn to live each day and appreciate
and embrace it. To surround yourself with people you love and always let
them know. Take hold of the things that are important, and make your
priorities about other people, not yourself. You can't begin to live until
you learn how to give of yourself to others. Something Morrie had always
done.

Mitch was very uncomfortable with the subject of death when they first began
getting together, each week on Tuesday. Morrie taught him most of all about
how to love. To open up your heart and express to those around you. And to
reconnect with people from your past and not be afraid to touch. Just like
he and Mitch had done.

Mitch's last meeting with Morrie was the Tuesday before Morrie died. Morrie
died on Saturday, November 4, 1995. It is really cool that it was the exact
day my mom and dad were married. Five years ago my older brother and sister
died from totally unrelated illnesses a few months apart. Many of the things
that Morrie talked about were things my mom and dad talked about when Jorge
and Cindy went to be with Jesus.

I wish more people would read this book and live their lives kind of like
Morrie taught Mitch. I believe the world would be a much better place and we
would all be much happier. There are a lot of bad things that are going to
happen to us that will not seem fair, but you can't let that stop you from
living. I hope I can teach other people things that I believe are important
as long as I'm alive. And even after I'm gone, I know that I will not only
live forever in heaven, but also on this earth in the hearts of the people
that have known and loved me.

Valerie
