[bksvol-discuss] Re: OT: Guide dogs--Standard Poodles

I'm just popping in to add that schnauzers don't shed, either and therefore need regular grooming like poodles.
There are other breeds in this category. I think Lassas may be another of them.

Shelley, thanks for the clarification re chocolate and dogs. I thought I knew quite a lot on the subject, but maybe the vets I've spoken to considered me one of the general public and concluded I'd understand caffeine as the dangerous ingredient better than the name of the specific chemical you named...der...I'll have to check my gen info file to remind myself of it's name. I'm idly wondering if this chemical is specific to chocolate/cocoa, or is a component of caffeine.Whether I ever discover that answer, Shelley, you definitely know dogs and I enjoy it when you and everyone else shares handy and interesting facts.

as for carob, I'm with those of you who think it's a pretty distasteful substitute for real chocolate. Ick!

Yesterday I read a recipe for dog biscuits. I hope some of the recipes in the cookbook we're anticipating are easier than the one I read and discarded as more trouble than I'll ever take to bake treats.

One thing I'm hoping for is a recipe for treats that don't need to be rolled out and cut in to bone shapes. Do you think we'll find recipes for doggie drop or bar cookies?

Always With Love,

Lissi

Hi, Cindy. You've got it backwards. *smile* Poodles have hair, where the
others have fur. That's why they don't shed. They're beautiful dogs, and I
wouldn't mind having one if it weren't for the grooming costs. Yikes! Take
care.

Thanks, Julie,

I understand that poodles are the only dogs that don't
shed, which would be handy, I think--and I love the
feel of their fur (I think my friend told me that they
have fur instead of hair--or vice versa).
They do seem intelligent, too.

Hi, Cindy. Shepherds used to be more prevalent as
guides than they are now,
but they're definitely still out there. The school
where I got my guide from
trains standard poodles, and I've seen them work.
They're excellent dogs.
Take care.

effects

-Thanks again, Shelley, for interesting information. I'd lose my balance, I think, if I had to carry a large, heavy dog, like s German sheperd or a setter or a lab up an escalator.

BTW, when I was at the March CSUN meeting waiting
for
Donna and Elizabeth I saw more labs, I think, than
anything--and I don't think I saw any German
Sheperds.
Another misconception we sighted people have--that
shepherds are the only guide dogs. But I must say I
missed them. If I had a choice I'd want one of
those.
Do any of you know anyone who uses a standard
poodle?

Cindy
