[bksvol-discuss] Re: O.T. Fw: Web Braille

Thank you Jana. I wonder how this relates to the present discontinuation of Web Braille. How disheartening for people with any authority to believe that children don't need to use braille especially in light of all the work done by the national organizations of the blind to promote it. Of course, for all sorts of reasons, many blind people don't have computers which means they can't use Bookshare either, so there will always be the need for hard copy braille. Do you suppose hard copy braille on demand from two or three central locations would be a viable solution. I am shocked at the description of the situation in Georgia as related by Monica and would think that is a state, not an NLS issue.

Hi, Jill! Her reasoning was that some people don't have the luxury of a BrailleNote or a similar reading device, but they still need Braille reading material. However, because Braille takes up so much space, and because folks here in Tennessee still often don't see the necessity for blind kids to learn it, there are some who have tried to persuade her to discontinue distribution of hardcopy Braille books.

Jana, What was her reason? This may shed some light on the problem. I had assumed that the more web braille was used, the less NLS would have to pay for hard copies. I have heard people say that they preferred to curl up with their hard copy book. I found no problem in curling up with my BrailleNote and find hard copy books to be cumbersome not to mention the problems in relation to their curculation.

Me, too, Jill. Next to Bookshare, Web Braille is my favorite way to obtain accessible material. It makes me sad to think that the service may have been permanently discontinued. Hopefully, this is not the case, and we will be able to download Braille books soon. Meanwhile, the director for the Nashville Library For The Blind made a plea at a local NFB conference where I recently sang for Braille readers to take advantage of hardcopy titles. Perhaps this would be a good time for me to break down and read an actual hard-bound book with no technology involved. <Smile> Take care!

Thanks for sharing so we all don't have to bother Judy Dixon. Let's all think positively as I can't even begin to imagine now how I would do without web braille. I consider it the greatest advent in NLS service since the beginning of the program itself.

Hello,

Web-Braille has been removed from public access temporarily. We apologize
for the inconvenience that the removal of Web-Braille has caused. At this
time, it is not known how long Web-Braille will be unavailable but we have
every hope that the curtailment of the service will be short-lived. We
are making every effort to resume this service as soon as possible.

In the interim, all NLS-produced books and magazines are available in
hardcopy braille from your braille-lending library. If the status of
Web-Braille changes, information will be posted on the main Web-Braille
page.

All the best,
Judy Dixon
