Thanks for asking and answering this question. I am proofing a book right now
that has many new chapters that start in the middle of the page. I like the
look of the asterisks before and after! Thanks again.

Hi Jill,
I do what you say, put asterisks on the line above and below chapter
headings on pages where chapter headings appear in the middle of the page.
Just what I do, and for the reason that you state, to let the reader know
that white space existed where asterisks are placed.

we had a chapter beginning in the middle of the page, we would put asterisks
on the line above the heading and again on the line after the heading in
