Anyhow, yes, when Carrie was a volunteer, she used to scan bunches of books and
put them up for validation. I proofread a few of her science fiction
submissions. I recall once back in I think late 2006 or early 2007, she put up
a few dozen erotica books. You never saw books get checked out so fast in your
life. <smile>
Seriously, though, we need more scanners. It may be that some scanners have
become discouraged because of publisher submissions. It's true that between
publishers and outsourcers, a great many books are being added without
volunteers. But it really doesn't take a lot of effort to find that there are
still a large number of books that may not be added by publishers for a long
time, if ever, or done by outsourcers. I just got a rather chunky new book from
a well known SF author in the mail yesterday from a publisher that Bookshare
doesn't have an agreement with that I've already started scanning. I recently
added two new science fiction books from a small press that Bookshare almost
certainly wouldn't have gotten otherwise. And even for publishers that
Bookshare does get books from, it is worthwhile to look into their older books.
Lissi and I will be shortly adding a book from Simon & Schuster that was
published back in 1995. It's very unlikely that that will be sent in by the
publisher. Certainly things have changed a bit. Back when I first joined, and
for the first four years or so, finding books to scan was simpler. All you had
to do was check the collection, and if the book wasn't there, you could get it
and scan it. No need to check anything further. Those days are gone.
Nevertheless, with just a bit of checking and care, lots of books, both old and
new, can still be found to scan.

Wouldn't it be better to just dump the good quality ones on the checkout list
for
repair? That one I am reading now really only needs a good and thorough
proofreading.
It is already readable, but there are numerous scanning errors to be corrected
and
the page headers need to be removed. However, I have made a quality report on it
and Bookshare informs me that it will be rescanned and replaced. I would not
suggest,
though, placing the fair quality books on the checkout list. Those are beyond
proofreading
help. They all need to be rescanned. It does seem to me , though that some of
these
suggestions could provide more for volunteers to work on.

Any book labeled PRIORITY is on the check out page by mistake. If you encounter
any book with that designation, please don't download it, and notify Carrie at

and let her know that the book is on the check out page by mistake. Those
books
labeled PRIORITY are books that have already been proofread by outsourcers and
which
have mistakenly ended up on the check out page, rather than in the approval
queue.
And, Reggie, I will have a few books available for proofreading very soon. All
formatting
has been done. What remains needing to be done is to read the books through,
and
to make sure that paragraph marks between dialogue are where they should be.
This
is what I mean.
"I don't want to go to Grandma's house," Max whined. "Why?" his mother asked.
As I have written the above, there are two lines of dialogue which have been put
together as one. What needs to happen here is for a paragraph mark, (carriage
return)
to be inserted before the word "Why?" In the books I'd like proofreaders for,
the
final thing needed will be a final spell check after reading the books.
I have one erotica book, one romance/fiction, one fiction, and one teen fiction
book
that will need a bit more care taken with it.
Are you interested in any of these? I can give titles and authors if you prefer
later.

Is there anyone who has finished scanning a book who needs a proofer? I would
like
anything on animals, history, fiction, romance, mystery and thrillers,

biography or events. All that is on without a hold is religion. Alternatively,
is there anyone who would let me have one of their holds?
Another problem. I downloaded what I think is a textbook Priority TX Health and
Wellness. I tried to make it into a .doc file, which I normally do as I have
Word
2003 and it will not open in my BN. When I opened it on the BN it gave me a
message
stating "Ipad converter does not recognize this as a word 2007." I think it was
scanned on a later Word. Can someone pick it up and proof? It looks like it was
priority. I intended to spend tonight and tomorrow proofing. Instead I had to
download
something about shells Shelley scanned. Hoping it has pic descriptions as I
wonder
if it is one of the books that people are working on for descriptions. I cannot
help with this. If it is not described and was only let go back to download
because
of this, can someone let me know, please before I get too far. Appreciate much!
