Smart quotes are just open and close quotes that look different. In
printed books, opening quotes have a two dots with curved tails hanging
down from them, while close quotes have the tail curving up from the
dots. Back in the dim dark days of typewriters, there was only one kind
of quote to type, which was usually just a two short straight lines.
Computer keyboards simply copied typewriter keyboards, so they also only
have straight quotes. Some time ago, the programmers at Microsoft
realized that it is fairly simple to track when someone types a quote,
and to convert the first one typed to an open quote, and the next one to
a close quote, and so on, even though there is only straight quotes on
the keyboard. They called this feature "smart quotes." Pretty much
every word processor can now do this, and not only the feature of doing
the conversion, but the quotes themselves have become "smart quotes."
Naturally,

Hi, members of the list, I'm ignorant about what a smart quote is. I know
about the regular kind in literature. What makes a smart quote smart and
what is it supposed to do? I have also heard of something called smart tags,
and I have no idea what they are. Yes, I'm new to this computer of mine, and
I have reference cards that give commands about smart tags and such, but
I've never heard of them. I'm really not trying to be facetious here. I'd
like to know what smart quotes and smart tags are. Thanks for the
information. Regards and many thanks from Kim aka Ellinder.

Hi Sue,

I'd do a find and replace to replace all of them. I say this
because in braille, the closing smart quote looks accurate (just like a
regular closing quote). Trouble is that it isn't. We just can't see that
the closing smart quote looks different from the regular closing quote in
braille. Just thought I'd mention that even though the difference isn't
apparent in braille, it still exists.

I'm sure that you figured this out by now, but thought I ought to mention
it, for the sake of completeness.

Thanks, Mayrie. I have been changing them manually as I proofread, but I
did not know they were called smart quotes.

Hi Sue!

The smart quotes make the opening and closing quotes both look like a
closing quote in braille. So, if you see an open quote in braille that looks
in braille like a closing quote when you're proofreading, you probably need
to tell Word to change smart quotes to regular or straight quotes.

What do smart quotes look like in Braille? What dots? You say A
circumflex, but I do not remember what that looks like? The reason I ask is
that a lot of the publisher quality books seem to have trouble with
quotation marks when translated into BRF files. They also have the problem
of sometimes interpreting the apostrophe as an open quote with a dot before
the quotation mark.

Hi Roger and Everyone else,

In true OpenBook fashion, your submission of Imago has smart quotes.
Whoever takes this book to proofread will need to change the smart quotes to
regular quotes. This problem is not apparent to anyone using only speech.
That is why I mention it. Also, OpenBook uses these smart quotes routinely.
I don't know if Bookshare's tools have learned to deal with this problem. I
think I remember someone saying that that is either in the works, or fixed,
but if not corrected, smart quotes read as an a circumflex in the daisy
books. I have no idea how munched they are in the brf files, but this
change from smart quotes to regular quotes is easy to do in word.

Just thought I'd mention it. Roger you didn't cause a problem, it's just an
issue that OpenBook has for everyone.

Mayrie
