Once I started to use Jake's page to check new books, I never go on bookshare's new books page. Especially since there is that one day delay. *smile*

Katie,

There are three ways to list new books that I'm aware of.

The first, and the one that everyone is familiar with, is Bookshare's New
Books List. Books don't automatically show up on this list when they are
approved. I had thought the list was updated nightly by a scheduled task,
but according to what Carrie said earlier today, Gustavo has to kick off
that task manually to update the New Books list. It also appears that
Gustavo is keeping more than one list which he has to update manually
because the links which he added on the Main page and the Volunteer Home
page for accessing the New Books List tend not to agree with the Browse New
Books page Until a day or two after there hasn't been any books approved

The best way to see the latest books is to use the links on Jake's website.
He has one for books in English and one for books in Spanish because it
isn't possible to run the querry for both due to the way the code for
Bookshare's Advanced Search is written. This method doesn't provide
publication dates for books, but it allows you to go back as far as you need
to find books you recognize, and since it is a querry to the database it is
always current. Also, once you've pulled up the page for listing the latest
books, you can bookmark it so that you don't have to go back to Jake's site
or access it through one of the e-mails that contains the link. Here's the
URL for the latest books in English:

http://www.bookshare.org/web/BooksByAdvancedSearch.html?titlestring=&authors
tring=&sort=4&language=en&quality=0&category%5B%5D=0&operation=submit&submit
=Search

There's also another website where you are supposed to be able to list books
approved between two specified dates. I say supposed to be able because I
get an Internal Server Error half the time when I use it. In the past, I
seemed to get the best results when I limited my range to insure that the
list was fairly small. However, I haven't used it since Jake figured out
the querry that the code for Advanced Search supports to list books in
reverse publication order. This site also appears to be maintained by a
volunteer, and according to the site, the database hasn't been updated since
March 25, 2006. No, the reason it hasn't been updated since then isn't
because no books have been approved. There were books approved earlier this
month before Gustavo went on vacation. Here's the URL for that site if you
wish to try it:

Hi All,

When books are finally approved from the admin queue do they then appear at
the top of the new books list???

Also a question I asked a while ago and don't remember seeing a response to.
IS there a way to search for books by release date? For example. All books
release since 03/01/2006?

She would have no way of knowing that since Elect Mr. Robinson for A Better
World appears as the last entry. Perhaps electing him would be a good
idea.

I've always thought that Bookshare's purpose was, duh, to share books.
That sharing is done by putting books on the website, where users can get
at them. As I and others have said, repeatedly, that is not happening
now, and hasn't happend for well over a month, and no one will say when it
will start happening again. I begin to wonder if Bookshare's purpose has
changed. Maybe fundraising is now the main purpose--I've seen it happen
in other non-profits, some of them near and dear to my heart.
If the purpose is still to actually share books, then why can't someone,
any trusted employee, start approving books again? Why can't anyone at
least tell us when the process might start up again? Am I wasting my
precious time, validating books that no one will ever see?
Tracy
