Hi, as for me, a hyphen is different from a dash for reasons Sue Stevens and Roger Bailey stated; however if one is using a dash in Braille one doesn't put a space before or after it contrary to works in print. The important thing is I understand the difference between hyphens and dashes even though my screen reader may not. I also learned that two hyphens constituted one dash and said dash was used to isolate a phrase in a sentence to amplify or illustrate what came before it and connecting that with what comes after it. A hyphen divides a word when one reaches the end of a line or for compound words. At one time, one would always write to-day rather than as today, cook-book rather than cookbook, etc. I suspect people who spent time as secretaries as my mother did had definite ideas about the difference between hyphens and dashes. I believe she told me about such when I was little and teachers in school re-enforced that. Some typewriters did not have a 1 key, so it was necessary to represent a 1 with an l. As I recall, most typewriters did not have a dash, so since a dash is simply a rather long hyphen it was represented with two hyphens. Perhaps I am remembering wrong, but I seem to recall that some typewriters did have a dash key. As I sit here before a computer key board with all the various keys that did not even exist back then on any typewriter I do kind of wonder why there is still no dash key. Whatever the reason, I still retain the convention of using two hyphens for the dash. I can't think of any situations in which you would have a double hyphen without it being a dash, but if there are any then the context of the double hyphen should let any of us know that it is a dash. That is why when I used the word dash I meant double hyphen, at least I meant that is how I would type a dash. To me a double hyphen is a dash. _ _ _ "Everything must justify its existence before the judgment seat of Reason, or give up existence." - Friedrich Engels Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/rogerbailey81 The Militant: http://www.themilitant.com Pathfinder Press: http://www.pathfinderpress.com Granma International: http://www.granma.cu/ingles/index.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Stevens" <siss52@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 4:30 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: M dashes and fonts > > Hi Mayrie, > > In the days when I took dictation on the dictaphone, if someone said > dash, > they meant two hyphens, not one hyphen.
