One way to solve the closing the lid thing, is to not.  I rarely close the 
lid, and this solves the "tearing the book apart" thing.

I use my hand to press down on the book and keep the pressure on.

The lid in my estimation is for, 1. Keeping off dust, and 2. for closing 
single page documents or magazines in place.

In fact with my old HP, I would remove the lid and stick it in the closet, 
as it just kept getting in the way.

I have not seen any change in my scans, and this is with sunlight, and 
artificial light on the scanner glass.
