[bksvol-discuss] Re: Just for the credit

Katie,

I think you might have missed my point. I have no objection to one getting credit for work done. In fact, I think one should be rewarded for their contribution.

My gripe is only with those who want the reward without earning it.

On to my other question. If the volunteer registration doesn't seem to work, how does one proceed?

Peace,
Ernie

Hi,

IN the early months of my membership, I did submit a number of books to get
the credit. However, now that I have enough credits I am still validating
and scanning. The first 5, 6 books I think in the earlier days I submitted I
was still learning, and my books were not as good as they are now. These
days when I scan I usually read the books and make most corrections and let
a validator complete the process.

I do have to agree with Cindy in that validators should get the same as a
scanner does. Even a system where everyone gets $2.00. The active submitters
and validators will continue their work on the site after they meet their
$50.

To say a person is taking advantage of the system by submitting and
validating is wrong is almost as if saying if I buy 10 coffees as StarBukc
does and use your coffee card is just taking advantage of the system. It is
an incentive for any member to take advantage of. I wonder how many books we
would have without a little incentive. Yes, there are still those that would
do the work for altruistic reasons but it would cut out a number of
volunteers. Also, those that are on this lists are the more active members
in the volunteer pool where many that validate for the credit and use the
system to download books the rest of the year are still fulfilling their
commitment to BookShare.

I suspect that most people who just want the credit
submit rather than validate, even doing the minimum. A
submitter gets $2.50 but, as Julie points out,
validators only get 50 cents--something many of us
feel is unfair and have been asking for the credits to
be more equalized. Those who submit just for the
credit rarely do any kind of pre-validation. Some
don't seem to realize that they won't get the credits
if their books are rejected and are not approved.
Others possibly--I don't know--may minimally validate
their own books so they will be approved and they will
get credit. That's a possible explanation for why
there are so many Fair books, and/or Excellent- or
Good-rated books that turn out to be Fair or Poor in
actuality.

Just my opinion

Cindy

So basicly, you have never validated just for the
sake of the credit. Therefore, my comments don't
apply to you at all, Julie. However, I stand by
what I said about those who take advantage of the
system simply for moniter advantage.

Some people can't afford the Bookshare
subscription without the credit. I'm one of them. I
don't do what I do specifically for the credits, but
it's certainly a nice incentive, since I wouldn't be
able to afford Bookshare without it. That doesn't
mean I wouldn't submit, credit or not, but it
certainly helps, and I'd imagine people validate for
the same reason, especially if they're interested in
the books. People who do it specifically for the
credit are probably in the minority, especially for
validating, since you only get 50 cents per
validation. I was merely suggesting reasons for why
some might do the bare minimum, but since when I do
validate, which is hardly ever any more, but when I
did, I chose books I wanted to read, anyway, so I
did more than that. Take care.

I really don't care who this offends, because I'm highly offended by a person who would only validate a book for their own credit! Let me just say that a person of that sort has no respect for his fellow members, the books, or him or herself. They are a real unmitigated drag--and I cleaned that up!

On a completely different subject, how does one
go about making his registration as a volunteer
valid?

I shall now validate this emale.

Ernie

Some people just want the credit and do the
bare minimum to get that credit. I do think most, if
not all, of us here are beyond that, but there are
some validators who don't even do a spell check.
That can be obvious with some of the books in the
collection. A lot of us do want better than that,
and a lot of us care more about the quality than the
credit, but there are some things that would have
been easy to spot if the validator would have done a
little more than the minimum. I've seen that in some
of the books I've read. Take care.

Julie,

Forgive my impertinence, but why would
someone validate a book if they really don't care?
Seems that if one is willing to volunteer to take on
that kind of work, it should be because they want
the books on the site to be the best possible.

Ernie

Hi, Tom. I can understand what you're
saying about this, but sometimes, if books are
poorly done, really long or anything like that, it
might take longer to get them done. Some validators
are perfectionists and want their books to be as
good as they can make them. Others just do the bare
minimum and let it go at that. Some books would be
rejected if a validator who really cared about that
particular book couldn't keep it until it was worthy
of putting up and as good as it could be made. This
might not be an issue for some, but for other books,
they may be rare or something that most people might
not think about rescanning, so that book might not
ever make it to the site if that happens. These are
all just thoughts out loud and probably at least
some reasons for why there is no limit. take care.

Gerald, A second thought, Has Bookshare
ever decided to limet the number of edit renewals

Tom,

Janice has said that it's been a bit
of a mad house around there since back in December
due to anual end of the year tasks and getting
things backunder control since the holidays. Once
things calm down a bit I would imagine that Gustavo
will whittle down the Awaiting Admin Approval queue.
As for if he ever gets to the bottom, I believe he
did that two or three times last year and ended up
sending out a message that he had nothing to
approve.

Hi Everyone, been laying low for a while. But I have a question, do you think Gustavo will ever get to the bottom of the administrative Q? Still have books sitting there from September, and my Dreamland series by Dale Brown has-never been found apparently, lost, "lost beneath the streets of Boston," their fate never to be learned, as the song goes. The answers I get are vague, that the books are out being edited, since May or June? Tom
