[bksvol-discuss] Re: I'd rather not see - was Re: Re: User cannot download NIMAC sourced book

The books I spoke of are no longer on the new books page. At least I couldn't find them when I looked last night. Earlier, there were several textbooks that told me these books were available to k-12 readers only.

You are right, some of the "publisher quality" books are available and readable, but not all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Estelnalissi" <airadil@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Dear Bob,

Why can't you read the publisher quality books?

I checked on 2 of them tonight and both were available in daisy and BRF formats. One was scanned by one of the volunteers we know well. I'm actually confused about these books. It appears as if we can download them as usual and that not all are of excellent quality. I'm not sure how they differ from our regular volunteer and staff submissions and validations except they, unfortunately, don't have short synopses.

Always with love,

Lissi

I just went to the bookshare new books site and found several "publisher quality" books. Frankly, if I can't read them, they aren't in the collection for me, so, I'd rather not see them if I'm not rated for k-12.

It's like going to a library and having them say "we have all these books, but not for you."

Plus, if things go as bookshare plans, I suspect that the number of books in the new books with publisher quality will increase, thus making it more than just an anoyance to skip them.

In short, give me a way to filter them out of my search, or, better still, just don't show them to me.

Just my thoughts.

Bob

We lost the battle to make NIMAC-sourced books available to blind
parents when we pushed this at the NIMAS/NIMAC committee meetings. APH
has taken a careful view of what can be done with these books, and the
publishers became less flexible as the discussions went on about this
because of other decisions they disagreed with. As someone said, these
are political decisions that trade off different interests and access
for all suffers a bit in the process.

The issue of permissions is a good one, and we're actually hiring for a
full-time position to work with publishers and authors. We'll see where
it leads.

These books are beautifully formatted XML that should glide effortlessly
into our collection. We're hoping to see more content like this.
