It's a shame, because it is likely an outdated scanning engine, if that is the
case. Just for laughs, I tried a children's book I had PDF'd for Doug to do
picture descriptions and OCR's it in ABBYY FineReader Pro 10 and mixed pictures
and text and irregular fonts came through well for me.
I hope Kurzweil and OpenBook update their OCR engines to take advantage of the
latest enhancements.
I also tested just taking a picture with my camera and OCR'ing that with decent
results despite no stand or anything and got acceptable results.

Hi Valerie,
I can't remember what causes the problem. But I've almost never gotten good
OCR from a pdf. That seems to have been the experience with everyone I've
talked to.
If the pdf is an image of text, and not text itself, I think that's the
problem.
Sorry, it's one of those things I can never remember properly.

Really? I have done it in the past. What are known issues?

Bummer that file format in which scans are saved is pdf. That notoreously
OCR's very badly in most cases.

I would think it would be possible since it is stored on a regular SD memory
card in a non-proprietary format (PDF, I think) that can then be converted by
any OCR software to RTF. Since there is no aperture determination needed or
focusing involved with fixed length focus, the only think left is does it have
smart cropping tech in the saving process.

I hope a blind person can use it. I don't care about their software in the
least, if it can work with Kurzweil 1000. Most scanners are initially set up
to take pictures, not do OCR. That's why there is Kurzy and OpenBook (don't
get me started on OpenBook!!!).
I'm gonna have to check this out! Thanks for putting me onto it, Valerie.
