That is a lot of subscribers, but think about how many more blind people in
the U.S. could benefit from bookshare that aren't. That number is small
compared to the number of people that could be eligible to use bookshare's
services.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: How many members does Bookshare have?

About a month ago, I asked for the info in an effort to help keep our
library system from charging for intra-library loans (t does charge for
inter-library loans; the effort was successful, btw--as my daughter wrote,
grass roots does work).

Carrie found out for me that at that time there were "3800 subscribers who
are not members of any organization, and over 19,000 who are members of
organizations that have accounts, mainly schools; of those, probably 15,000
are students; he rest are their parents and teachers."

It make one feel good, doesn't it, to know how many people bookshare is
helping. On the other hand, it is somewhat disturbing to suspect that such a
few of the 3800 subscribers volunteer. I'm know there are some who aren't on
the volunteer email list--we all know of really good and careful and
wonderful volunteers who have dropped from the list but still carefully scan
and validate--and I know there are others we don't know abotu, but I wonder
how m any there are?

Carrie, can you find out for us how many subscribers either scan or
validate or do both? Or what percentage--not of the organizational members
but the others?

G.Cindy
