Helping everyone read: Eagle Scout adds 24 books to bookshare.org

Visually impaired people can visit www.Bookshare.org to read stories in 
large print, download in Braille or listen to thousands of books, including 
24 books that Matthew Devcich, of Chantilly, posted on the nonprofit's Web 
site.

Because he has astigmatism, Devcich, 16, has a hard time reading most books.
While looking for solutions to the problem several months ago, he stumbled 
onto Bookshare and decided the site was so helpful that he would add more 
books to it for his Eagle Scout project.

"The thing that drew me to it is that it would help people everywhere and 
not just in Fairfax County," said Devcich, a junior at Chantilly High School 
and a member of Boy Scout Troop 695.

Devcich recruited volunteers to meet at the Chantilly Library in a 
conference room every Saturday last month to scan, reformat and proofread 
books about thoroughbred racing onto Bookshare.

Bookshare is a subscription-based digital library that was developed by 
Benetech, a California-based nonprofit.

"There is nothing wrong with a normal Eagle Scout beautification project, 
but he really went above and beyond to find something that will impact 
countless of people," said Debra Wright, a Boy Scout mother and a volunteer 
for Devcich's project.

"It's people like Matthew who have made 30,000 books' text available at 
Bookshare.org today," said Janice Carter, director of Benetch's Literacy 
Programs in a release.

Devcich's mother, Beth Devcich, said she is proud of her son for wanting to 
do an Eagle Scout project that would have a "lasting effect."
