If contributing to the bookshare collection is replaced vy voluntary contributions by specific publishers we may find our collection limited to just these publishers. That would limit what we read in the same way RFBD and NLS limits us.
We need both publisher contributions and contributions from members to insure we get to read whatever we want to. Lacking choice is just another way of saying censorship.
