Subject: Accessible E-books and DTBs at NCAM/WGBH

Hello Everyone:

The WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) is currently
studying ways to integrate accessible multimedia into both Digital
Talking Books (DTBs) and e-books of various formats, through its Beyond
the Text project. Complete information about this project can be found
at http://ncam.wgbh.org/ebooks. Here you'll find a project summary, a
comparison chart of e-book/DTB hardware and software, and links to
sample books with accessible multimedia. The e-books and DTBs were
created from materials provided by The Concord Consortium's "Seeing
Math" curriculum. (For more information about Seeing Math, please
visit http://www.concord.org.) Funding for Beyond the Text is provided
by the U.S. Department of Education.

NCAM is now seeking volunteers who are blind or deaf to test its accessible e-book
and DTB prototypes. If you use e-books or DTBs regularly and would like to
download and try these samples, please contact the project manager,
Geoff Freed, at geoff_freed@xxxxxxxx Participants should expect to
spend no more than one hour testing the materials and answering a few
questions regarding the accessibility and usability of the books.

NCAM is also seeking five volunteers who are blind or deaf to come to its research
facilities in Boston to test the prototypes with project staff. On-site testers
will receive a $40 honorarium for their time and effort. If you are
interested in participating in these live tests, please contact the
project manager, Geoff Freed, at geoff_freed@xxxxxxxx for further
details.

Thanks!
