I am not sure I actually killed the book. I don't think it would have stood up to more than one more reading even without having been scanned. That book was so brittle that when I retrieved one of the pages that had flown away it actually broke into about three pieces. It was fortunate that I had already scanned that page or the whole process might have come to an end right there. The problem with the book was the kind of book it was. It was published in 1961 and there are a lot of books a lot older than that which are perfectly intact and will stay that way for many decades to come. This one, though, was a very cheaply made mass market paperback when it was made in the first place and I don't think it was stored in ideal conditions. Well, it was stored in a back room of a neighbor's house for a good many years, but I think he got it used and I don't know where it might have been stored before that. Anyway, I really hate to throw a book away, but when I finished scanning this one I just had to face up to the fact that no one was ever going to read it again. It now resides in the county landfill.

Roger, so glad you scanned this one--looking forward to reading it.

I used to feel terrible about "killing" a book to get it into the collection. Now, I see it as a way of preserving books that might otherwise disappear.

And let me say that as the submitter I put this book to its last reading. It was old and brittle and literally fell apart as I was scanning it. Several times I had to pick up pages as they flew through the air, but now those pages are in the Bookshare collection and can be read uncountable times as the physical copy rests in peace.

Hi all,

I just wanted to alert those of you who are Science Fiction fans that
I've just proofed and had approved The Star Dwellers by James Blish.
It's not too long, and it's really good, though it was published in
1961, making the technology a bit outdated. It's a good story, though,
and I know there are several Science Fiction fans on here who would
enjoy reading this novella. It's only one hundred and twenty-nine
pages, so I'm calling it a novella. I think that there are actual word
counts to separate novels from novellas and novellas from short
stories, but I can't remember them off-hand. Happy reading.
