Ann,

This isn't quite right.
Html, Pdf, rtf, are among others that are viewed as standards for information interchange between operating systems, recognized as such by the International Standards Organization. You can find software running under any of the mainstream operating systems capable of accessing these file types. As a side note, Microsoft is trying very, very hard to get their OOXML adopted as a standard, instead of its main competition ODF, and the final vote by the ISO will be due in less than 30 days.
