Actually, Andy, the topic isn't closed, although it's good to know that your particular situation has been handled. Smile. I'm working on finding a common way that we can use to describe family tree charts, so I am very interested in Misha's input. smile.

Thanks, but Julie already covered the first 9 pages for me. So this topic is
closed.

Charts

I guess all the Little House books are very popular, all three of my
local libraries have copies of Down to the Bonny Glen (though the copy
at the nearest library says "not yet returned" wonder if that's a polite
way of saying overdue). I'll take a look at it and let you know if the
family tree is within my capacity. If it doesn't have too many
generations or cross-links (people marrying cousins and the like), I
might be able to break it into several ancestry trees and then explain
the relationships of the roots of those. No guarantees, but I'll check.

Hi all,

As Scott and Melissa mentioned, I created a way to convert a pedigree
or ancestry into an understandable written description. As of today
it's available at:

I couldn't have done it without the helpful feedback of other
volunteers on what worked and what didn't work, including Melissa and
Shelley, and their help is deeply appreciated. smile.

Family trees are different again from pedigree and ancestry charts,
and I don't have a way yet to easily and consistently describe those.
A pedigree chart or ancestry chart lets you track back all the direct
parentage of a specific individual. A family tree, in contrast,
displays all the relatives of a specific individual, going back
several generations. So a pedigree chart will show parents, and
grandparents and then grandgrandparents, for example, while a family
tree will show every single relative that's known, by blood and by
marriage, to that individual. It's much more complicated, and can get
insanely convoluted when showing, for example, how two individuals are
related to each other several generations back through something like
third cousins once removed! smile.

I am still working to see if I can come up with a technique to help
create consistent and understandable written descriptions for the more
complicated family tree charts and graphics. Jamie Yates has already
shared some ideas based on a book she worked on. And I've got some
ideas from my mathematician/statistician husband, who is helping. All
suggestions or ideas on how to create a description of a family tree
are welcome! Send them to me at: cherryjame@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . So
far, I've contacted several genealogy experts and the Mormon church,
with no luck. None of them know how to create these kinds of
descriptions for the blind and print disabled. But with all the
shared experiences in this community, I'm hopeful that we can find a
way to do it. smile. Fingers crossed!
