I agree about picking a setting that seems to achieve the best balance when you 
see occasional errors on both the light and dark side of brightness. My 
confidence threshhold is set at 98.5,. 
I must be the only one, or one of the ffew. But I just haven't found 400 dpi 
and gray scale to be particularly helpful. That might be because my old 4p 
doesn't actually support 4000 dpi, so when I set k1k for that 
resolution, there is some slight of hand going on  in the background. I also 
have a tough time holding a big book down for the amount of time it takes to 
let the scanner do its thing at that setting with gray scale. But 
when I have tested with gray scale, without 400 dpi, I've found it didn't give 
me anything better than what I could get with a plain old static threshhold and 
adjusted brightness.
