[bksvol-discuss] Re: Copyrights and synopses

Hi. In principle, yes, absolutely. However, we have a couple rights issues here. The book itself has one set of copyrights. That can include the actual book text, art or illustrations, etc. The reviews from other sources are under a completely different copyright. It is well that the actual paper book quotes from New York Times or whatever, but again most likely the publishers have a prior agreement. That does not mean that we can quote that same copyrighted material. It is not technically a part of the book, just as quoting from Shakespeare at the beginning of a chapter is not part of the book. The difference is that Shakespeare is public domain and NYT is not. So yes, quoting what's in the book itself and is a part of the book jacket is fine and good. Quoting other quotes that aren't part of the book is, to the best of my understanding, not fine. Again, there would probably be no problem quoting other reviews, but this is stretching fair use and could cause problems later. I hope that makes sense.

Ah, but Tony, I have to disagree if the "reviews" are on the book jacket.

I copy what is right off the book jacket, and use that for the long
synopsis, which is perfectly legal as far as I know.
