You may try clicking on the  "show/Hide"  icon.  I looks like a backwards
"P" on the tool bar.  It  will show the codes such as line breaks and other
things that you don't see in the view format of Word. It does not sound like
a font issue to me anyway.

Not sure whether it's the problem, but to change all font in the book,
select the entire thing (ctrl+A), then do ctrl+D to go into the font
dialogue. Go to the size edit box, and type 8. then hit enter.
