[bksvol-discuss] Re: Building The Perfect Bookshare

I'd like to see formatting of books change. I've brought this up before but
I'll restate.
I'd like to see headings for chapters, titles and subsections. I tried an experiment once. I
formatted my rtf to have chapter headings ((html type headings) and it all
got removed. Implementing such things would make navigation much easier. The
html from daisy books is allmost as messy as microsoft word html. And tidy
doesn't work too well at cleaning it up, though I think I've just about got
that worked out. Let me show you what I mean. I'll leave out the tag
delinieators since when I send them you won't see. But this is what a book
should look like.
Begin example:
h3The catcher in The Rye h3
h4By H4
h2 J. D. Salinger h2
hr
h3 contents h3
a href="#chapter_1" Chapter One a br

a href="#chapter_2" Chapter Two a br

and the actual chapter headings look like this:
h3 a name="chapter_1" id="chapter_1" a Chapter One h3

End example.
Now, clicking the linsk above will take you directly to those chapters. You can't do that with the current html output. Maybe you can with a daisy player, I don't know. Aside from that, I would like to be able to get page images when validating books. The current system is far from efficient. Sometimes the name of the volunteer who submitted the book isn't always available, and it's often times not easy for validators to get to the library to find the book if they have questions about pages. So books hang around languishing on step one for ages with nobody doing anything with them. Having the option of Submitting a group4 tif would be much more efficient, I think. NOt everybody has OCR software, I realize, but you can get free packages. And for those who don't want to bother with getting and learning an OCR package, well, the image is an optional download. Rtf is still the best multipurpose format for submissions, but users who submit can also be asked to submit an optional tif image.
Anyway these are some of my thoughts, I'm sure I'll come up with more.

Roger, I see your point. The categories are supposedly going to be
changed with the new site. I think that will make things better for a
lot of people. I would really like to see tags implemented like thos
on the social bookmarking sites so people can add keywords so other
people could find books more easily. People who like cozy mysteries
could look for that tag and could avoid the noir subgenre of mysteries
if they prefer. I imagine there are subgenres in science fiction as
well that could be improved by having tags.
