fidonet was a worldwide collection of dialup BBSes. It operated by
having each system call into a local hub and pass traffic back and
forth. Hubs would then transfer with their neighbors etc. It was
capable of e-mail, group discussion and file transfer (though as far
as I know the last was rarely used due to cost and speed constraints).
Slow but relatively effective for the time period.
Similar in a lot of ways to usenet, and especially the pre internet
days when usenet was delivered via the unix-to-unix copy protocol.
Just like uucp messages could easily require being forwarded by many
hosts before ending up at the final destination. Unlike uucp due to
the region-hub-node scheme of fidonet determining the route was quite
a bit simpler.
UUCP often required a user to manually determine a route, and even
worse often multiple routes in order to ensure that a message actually
reached the destination.
At this point its only lasting contribution is likely the first rule
of fidonet which I already quoted. "Do not be excessively annoying;
do not be excessively annoyed."
I'm not familiar with bluewave.
