I read somehwhere, a couple of decades back, that 
authors/editors/publishers occasionally intentionally insert errors as a 
copyright check.
For example, a compiler of a baseball statistics book might transpose a 
few batting averages and use that as a catch for someone who might then 
attempt to plagarize the information in another book.
