Hi, I am very picky about the cookbooks I like. I'm extremely
interested in ethnic cookbooks as well as subject cookbooks, examples
would be grains, beans (or legumes) vegetables, fruits (if the family
only makes boring preparations for veggies and fruit cookbooks are
definitely desired for ideas), herbs and spices, sauces, chutneys,
jams, pickles, preserves and conserves, ground meat preparations,
smoking, sausage-making, everything having to do with desserts, pies,
puddings, cakes, muffins, scones, biscuits, rolls, etc., making your
own cereals,. A lot of cookbooks for us as blind people do tend to
dumb things down a bit, don't you think? When someone wasinstructing
me how to cook, I felt the lessons I got didn't help much. For one
thing the lessons occurred once a week and I don't think they got into
the techniques for preparing food effectively. There were no
thermometers then and God help you if you told the instructor you
wanted to make yeast bread from scratch, use the deep-fryer or
broiler, etc. To this day I'm scared to light matches, I don't know
how to deep-fry or barbecue anything, and I've never canned anything.
Regards, Kim Friedman.

I'd be willing to help out with scanning if there are cookbooks people
are interested in, too. Admittedly, I didn't have the patience to try
to find the list on that site, but I'd be happy to help out. I've
noticed that some of the cookbooks that recently have come out are
available on bookshare already from the publishers, too. You just have
to look for them, they don't show up in the cookbook category. I
wonder how books to be submitted by the publishers are selected.
Someone mentioned the whole grain baking book from King Arthur
recently, and that's one of those big books that would really be nice
to get from the publisher because due to their size, they're not easy
to scan and talk about time-consuming! (smile!) I have the 200th
anniversary King Arthur baking book and it's in pretty good shape to
submit for proofreading but a friend is going to type up one page that
was a picture of an old hand-written recipe. That book was a big
three-ring binder so it wasn't hard to work with and it scanned pretty
good, too. I just need to work on cleaning it up some more.

Me too, Debby. I have. Tot be in the right mood with a big chunk of
time to spare to work on cookbooks. Rewarding when it's done but
tedious while you're doing it.

unless someone wants to check it out before I get a chance.
