[bksvol-discuss] Re: Accessible E-Books OT

Hi Barbara!

No, I didn't. *smile* I wanted to read with my Braille display. The text
would not display correctly on the screen, even without using a screen
reader. I had a couple sighted people try to read the material with JAWS
unloaded, and they had no more success than I did.

Blessings.

Did you install the free, Text-To-Speech package as well as the Microsoft
Reader. The Microsoft Reader will not read audibly without installing this
additional software. Because of my e-book disaster, I have done a lot of
research on the Readers. I think that the Text-To-Speech package is new
software that was created to make the Microsoft Reader accessible.

Hi Barbara!

A couple of years ago, I tried the Microsoft Reader. It was impossible to
use. Maybe they've improved it since, but I had no luck with it, and have to
have the purchase of e-books refunded because it was not workable.

Blessings.

I found out by accident that there are certain Readers (free software
programs online) such as the Microsoft Reader that make certain e-books
accessible to people with reading disabilities. The way I found this out was
that I wanted to read the book called, Alive in Necropolis, and found out
that it comes as an e-book from an Australian Website. I purchased the book
and tried to read it with the Reader that was designed to read it.
Unfortunately, this Reader did not have a Text-To-Speech feature. Luckily,
after I explained this to the company, they refunded my credit card. In the
meantime, I did some research and found that there are other Readers such as
the Microsoft Reader that I told you about previously that do have this
Text-To-Speech function and the book is available from another company using
this software. The Readers are free of charge. However, rather than try and
purchase the book through this company, I thought that more people would
benefit by having Amazon.com send the book directly to Carrie to have her
scan it. I plan to proof read this book for her and get it into the
collection. The reason why I am telling you all this is because I want you
to know that there are accessible e-books but in order for them to be
accessible you need to have an accessible Reader software program. I also
found that the used books from Amazon.com are inexpensive and this sight
might be a good one to get books to scan.
