I just accepted and uploaded Shamelss Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good. It's a very amusing (I suspect Hotchner did the actual writing, with, of course, a lot of input and additional humor from Newman) book by Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner of how the Newman's Own Brand of products came to be, and then were marketed. There's also a long section about the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, founded and run with the profits from the foods; letters both funny, from eaters of the product, and moving, from campers and their parents; cartoons; and winning recipes a Newman's Own/Good Housekeeping Magazine contest. Newman's Own profits in the form of grants--I think there is a foundation--are given to worthwhile organizations. In addition to major ones you've all heard of, there was this line in the book: "But the biggest kick we get is when we can help obscure little organizations that couldn't generate the publicity to attract the attention of donors." Do we know any organizatin like that? (smile?) I wrote a note to Janice or whoever the person who is trying to get funding--I think actually it's Jane--and sent her a web-page that gives details and an application form. It would, of course, be great if Bookshare could get a grant. I think the scanner was Dorothy Dean; I'm not sure, but whoever it was did an excellent job. There were very few errors in the main text. The problem with the book, which was why I took it, was that it was originally a txt book and didn't have page breaks -and, of course, the fractions in the recipes needed to be correct.
