[bksvol-discuss] About The Privacy Of This List

According to Freelists, both Bookshare lists and other lists Freelists
host are publicly searchable and are indexed by major search engines.
They use a filter to hide the poster's full email address, but if you
post a phone number or mailing address in your signature, anyone can
see it. So finding your own messages on Google has nothing to do with
whether you are subscribed to the list. Google indexes posts from
Freelists automatically. In fact, Freelists has a terms of service
statement on their website explaining some of this and explaining how
privacy is handled. Other services like YahooGroups work in the same
way. So if you posted about a book called Sally On The Seashore,
someone searching on Google or Yahoo for that title might find your
post. They won't be able to get your email address, but they can see
your name as being the person who posted the message.

If you do a search for your name, Google will only show you 3 results
from Freelists because they only show 3 results from any given domain
when you do your initial search. If you want to see everything you've
posted from Freelists, click on the button for more results from
Freelists that you'll find on the Google screen once you've done your
search.

A friend of mine says it like this. "If you're comfortable saying
something through a megaphone, go on and post it to a list. If it's
too private for that, use the telephone." Nothing you post on the
internet really disappears. In fact, I found a recipe the other day
that I had posted to a mailing list in 1993. It's on a site I've never
heard of. I only found it by putting my name into Google.

It is quite safe to post to the Bookshare lists about what you're
reading, what you think about things. Just don't post things that are
private, things like your phone number, your passwords for sites you
use, or that you live in an apartment where there is no lock on the
door. In other words, have fun but be smart. (smile)
