Robin,

I bet you're right. That's why it's always best to be specific when you ask
questions and provide background (like what software you're using) when you
ask a question.

My impression is that the F is a shorthand to specify that this is a file
and that the 1 is a shorthand to specify version 1. I'm basing this on BKS
files having a D in place of the F which I'm guessing stands for DAISY, and
the fact that I've seen D2 when I've downloaded an improved book. Again,
this is only a guess, but I imagine that Bookshare uses it as a way to
distinguish between different versions of files such as files uploaded by
different volunteers which happen to have the same name and that it's more
useful to the tools and the Bookshare system than people.

The bottom line is that it's not important from our standpoint and to not
worry about it. I always drop the F1 from the name of HTML files and delete
the NCX, OFS, SMIL, and XML files after I download and unpack books from
the collection because it's a personal preference and ignore it during
validation.

HTH

Gerald

I think Nancy is asking about the f1 that is in most files which come from
bookshare.org, just before the file extention...I don't know the meaning
of this either, or if it even has a meaning...
