I have seen the 1 instead of an "I" in some scans. IT really depends on the

I don't know whether this should be on Jake's tips list but lately I have
started searching for 1 instead of I in  the books I validate; this seems to
be a very common scanning error and, of course, it isn't reporeted in rank
spelling. It also often occurs as one of those extraneous characters too.
