[birdky] winter bird count

On December 26,nine people participated in the midwinter count in our circle
which includes the Lower Nolin River Valley and the upper 3/4 of Nolin
Reservoir, mostly in W. Hart and E. Grayson counties. A total of 63 species
were identified, 10 more than last year, which was the first count for this
circle. A day that began as a cold clear morning with ice on many ponds, warmed
to about 50 degrees, a beautiful day for birding.Unusual sightings for this
area included 3 green winged teal and a common goldeneye at a small fishing
lake. Nolin River Reservoir ponly yielded several pied billed grebes and
mallards in the waterfowl category, along with ring billed gulls, great blue
heron, and a kingfisher. In mid morning we observed a huge mixed flock of
starlings, redwings, and grackles. An American pipit was spotted in a flock of
horned larks and at least 5 harriers were seen foraging in the same area. John
