I did another tour of western Henderson Co. and Uniontown Dam (in
Union Co.) this morning.
Extremely unusual weather: Overcast, windy, 63º and rising, at 11AM
the promised front started passing through with dropping temps. and t-
storms.
I started above Uniontown Dam at 7AM. Not a whole lot there. Canvas
Backs 25, Pied-billed Grebes 30, Hooded Mergansers 4, Red-tailed Hawk
1, Kestrel 1, Ring-billed Gulls 10, Great-blue heron 1, Downy
Woodpecker, song-sparrows, White-throated sparrows, Ruby-crowned
kinglet, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse.
Passing through Uniontown (Union Co.) there were Eurasian Collared
Doves.
Next Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake Unit of the Sloughs. Added Golden-
crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Tree Sparrows 3.
Sloughs main unit. Canada Geese, Snow Geese, White-fronted Geese,
Mallards, Pintails, Am. Widgeon, E. Bluebirds, Killdeer.
Cape Hills Unit: Carolina Wren, Winter Wren, Blue Jays, White-
breasted Nuthatch, Robins, N. Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-
bellied Woodpecker, Am. Goldfinch, Dark-eyed Junco, and more Yellow-
rumped Warblers.
Next just before the front was coming through I back-tracked and
checked out Anderson Pond at the Sloughs: Ring-necked Ducks, Black
ducks, Gadwall, Am. Widgeon.
Along the roads I saw Red-winged Blackbirds, Starlings, Com.
Grackles, Meadowlarks, Cardinals, Com. Crows, and flocks of Horned
Larks.
Not seen: Tundra Swans or any Shovelers.
Overall the number of Geese and Ducks at the Sloughs, so far, seems
really down again this winter.
-------------------------------------------------
Personal observation:
The High Ground Hunting Club has almost completely surrounded the
Sloughs WMA. As the High Ground Hunting Club has developed there
seems to be a decrease in the number of ducks and geese using the
Sloughs in winter. But then I do know that the number of ducks and
geese has also fallen across the Ohio River at Hovey Lake in Posey
Co. Indiana. So it must be coincidental.
